The Key to Happiness – Hygge

Denmark consistently ranks among the happiest nations in the world.[1] Hygge plays an irreplaceable role for Danes in experiencing happiness. Hygge can help anyone, not just Danes, experience happiness.

You might wonder what "hygge" is and how to pronounce it. It can be pronounced "hooga." Hygge is often called the art of creating intimacy, coziness of the soul, and taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things.[2] Meik Wiking, the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute and a research associate for Denmark at the World Database of Happiness, defines hygge as:

An atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and allow ourselves to let our guard down. You may be having an endless conversation about the small or big things in life – or just be comfortable in each other’s silent company – or simply just be by yourself enjoying a cup of tea.[3]

Danes consciously and intentionally prioritize investing their time, effort, and money as individuals and as a society to cultivate cozy and comfortable experiences and environments. There are things, environments, and dear ones that make people feel good, safe, and valued.

For some, the experience of coziness can be achieved by cuddling in a blanket on a cold evening with your favorite drink and a book in your hands, sitting with your partner or friend in your balcony or at a seashore, or organizing a potluck at your house inviting your friends. Any experience and environment that creates a safe, cozy, peaceful, and pleasurable feeling will generate hygge.

An important thing about hygge is that you need to intentionally create it. You need to choose happiness.
