Laughter: A Sacred Medicine

When was the last time you laughed—not politely, but freely, from the heart?

Laughter is not only a physical, psychological, and social experience. It is also a spiritual one. There is something sacred about laughter. It loosens the tight grip of worry, brings breath back into the body, and reminds us that pain and seriousness do not have the final word.

Some health writers have described laughter as an “inner jogging.” The image is helpful. When we laugh, the body becomes alive. Laughter can stimulate the heart and lungs, relax muscles, reduce stress, and release endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. It may also help reduce pain and tension. In this sense, laughter is not a small thing. It is a gift given to the body.

Laughter also heals the mind. LeAnn Thieman reminds us that laughter brings us into the present moment. It lifts us, even briefly, above our problems. It helps us see with a larger perspective and brings us closer to others.

Pope Francis beautifully echoes this relational gift of laughter. Speaking to artists from the world of humor, he said, “It is easier to laugh together than alone.” He also reminded them that homo sapiens is also homo ludens—the human person is not only a thinking being, but also a playful being. We are made not only for work, worry, and seriousness, but also for play, joy, and shared laughter.

Peter Berger, in Redeeming Laughter, takes this insight even deeper. He sees laughter as more than amusement. For Berger, the comic experience can point beyond ordinary reality. It gives us a glimpse of redemption—a hint that the brokenness, heaviness, and contradictions of life are not ultimate.

This does not mean laughter denies suffering. Sacred laughter is not escape. It is a small act of hope. It says, “This pain is real, but it is not the whole story.” Perhaps this is why laughter can feel so freeing. For a moment, the soul breathes. The heart remembers joy. The body participates in hope. To laugh is to be reminded that grace still moves through our tired lives.

Laughter can become the body’s prayer when words are not enough.

  1. Thank you for reminding me that how important it is to laugh freely from the heart. It's a new knowledge for me that it's an inner jogging.

  3. Re: "Pope Francis ... also reminded them that homo sapiens is also homo ludens"

Above all, everyone should be reminded of, or made to recognize, that
the self-given label of "homo sapiens" is utter fake. The biggest lie ever!

At the core of homo sapiens is unwisdom (ie, madness) and so the human label of "wise" (ie, sapiens) is a complete collective self-delusion --- study the free scholarly essay “The 2 Married Pink Elephants In The Historical Room" ... https://www.rolf-hefti.com/covid-19-coronavirus.html

“When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker, a raving lunatic.” --- Dresden James

Once you understand that humans are "invisibly" insane (pink elephant people, see cited essay) you'll UNDERSTAND (well, perhaps) why they, especially their alleged experts, perpetually come up with myths and lies about everything ... including about themselves (their nature, their intelligence, their origins, their "supreme" status, etc).

Isn’t it about time for anyone to wake up to the ULTIMATE DEPTH of the human rabbit hole — rather than remain blissfully willfully ignorant in a narcissistic fantasy land and play victim like a little child?

"Growing up means realizing that none of the worst villains are in prison." --- Caitlin Johnstone, Independent Journalist (https://archive.ph/zDqoh)

"The world is the way that it is because most people do not care enough (even if they SAY they want things to be different) to change it through their actions." --- Mark Passio, Spiritual Teacher

"The problem we face is that few people really care beyond being fed and entertained. Few are educated and capable of thinking." --- Paul Craig Roberts, Ph.D., American economist & former US regime official, in 2026 [https://paulcraigroberts.org/the-lies-used-to-deceive-us]

How can the masses get out of this whole mess (and create justice, freedom and peace for all)? First, EVERYONE needs to learn, and teach others, what TRUE morality is ---99% of people don't know what it is because (1) it's NOT taught in the official indoctrination system, better know as the "education system," and (2) it's NOT the same as religious morality: https://odysee.com/@woeih:e/Mark-Passio-Government-Is-Slavery:a
